Health Workers
One of the most successful projects that Bridge supports is a healthcare project in the one of the slums in south-east Delhi.
This was set up about 15 years ago after we heard how a young boy had died from a simple cut that went untreated.
Talking with our Indian partners, we realised that we could train a group of women who live in the slum areas to help their friends and neighbours and save lives.
Currently we fund 30 healthcare workers to
- Provide basic healthcare – treating cuts and bruises and other minor ailments which could become more serious or even fatal in the slum areas
- Help women during pregnancy and childbirth and provide support while children are young
- Teach about nutrition, hygiene and other preventative measures
- Help slum dwellers access the healthcare system when confronted with more serious illnesses.
The health care workers support approximately 40,000 people across the slum and the health outcomes have improved significantly. In particular, the rate of infant mortality has dropped since this programme has been in place.
People are pleased to see me. They will often come to me for help and advice, even at night!
